2008 ESRI Developer Summit

December 3rd, 2007 · 33 Comments · ESRI

Rob Elkins says that there will be some complimentary pre-conference seminars at the 2008 ESRI Developer Summit next year. I have to say this is probably a good idea as many of the folks I talked to at the Dev Summit last year were well over their heads as many of the sessions are quite detailed (and many are of no value beyond marketing).

So who is planning on going to the Dev Summit next year? Is there anything that ESRI has released/done in 2007 that makes you excited or are you going to put your conference budget somewhere else?

I’m still interested in this .NET ADF. We just have not been able to implement it in a way we’d like. I’m hopeful sitting down with the .NET folks will help me get this stuff figured out.

I didn’t see if you were planning on going James?

I think he said he was going here:

ESRI hires new Director of Product Management

  • 3 ESRI's Bitch // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:04 pm

    I know for a fact that he isn’t going….

  • 4 James Fee // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:07 pm

ESRI’s Bitch: How do you know that I’m not going? If your IP address is correct, you shouldn’t have a clue.

  • 5 ESRI's Bitch // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:18 pm

    Are you going James?

  • 6 James Fee // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:20 pm

That is quite different than saying you know for a “fact” that I’m not going isn’t it?

  • 7 ESRI's Bitch // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:22 pm

I just want you to tell folks you aren’t going.

  • 8 J Wallis // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:29 pm

will attendance drop if James doesn’t go? Now that’s what inquiring minds want to know.

  • 9 Gretch // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:30 pm

Don’t you dare call out Agile James. They are like a cult…..

  • 10 Lefty // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:32 pm

I’m going if only to hang out with folks at night. That was very fun, much better than the UC.

  • 11 Lester Adams // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:35 pm

I’m still somewhat interested in going, but I have to admit I just don’t see how applicable this will be. We’ve pretty much dropped ESRI server and the ArcObjects stuff was pretty weak.

Maybe if they promote the REST API before hand I’ll be interested, but I just don’t see that happening. James seems to have moved on from ESRI Server and I just don’t see how they’ll get the word out beyond their horrible blogs.

  • 12 opensourceguru // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:36 pm

That a boy James, walk away from ESRI.

  • 13 Craig // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:40 pm

Yes, REST API. That is what I’m VERY interested in. James, what do you know about the REST API? I haven’t seem much posting on it from you.

  • 14 James Fee // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:45 pm

@Craig: I know very little about the REST API. ESRI hasn’t really posted much about it. I really don’t have any information about it that you don’t.

  • 15 Anon // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:48 pm

Yea, what did happen to that REST API. That seemed like the answer to everyone’s problems with the WebADF. Did they drop the REST API?

  • 16 Alvin // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:49 pm

    Are you talking about this?

    http://www2.arcwebservices.com/v2006/develop/rest.jsp

  • 17 Anon // Dec 3, 2007 at 2:51 pm

No, they mentioned a REST API for ArcGIS Server at the 2007 UC. That is ArcWeb….

  • 18 David Davis // Dec 3, 2007 at 3:00 pm

There seems to be much less interest in the Dev Summit this year from folks I know. Maybe it is related to James not posting about it weekly (just kidding James ;) ).

EDN is the problem. That website has just drifted to the point I really don’t use it that much (other than bookmarking the Documentation). EDN is really just about the license, not the website.

  • 19 Kipter Uh // Dec 3, 2007 at 3:40 pm

I agree, REST might be worth attending if I learn more about it. Right now I don’t see much need to jump in. I mean does anything sound less intersting than this DevSummit session?

Development Patterns for the ArcGIS Server SOAP and REST API
This session will illustrate for developers the ways they can take advantage of the SOAP and REST APIs exposed by ArcGIS Server for the development of desktop and web applications. Coding examples, design patterns, and best practices will be included.

  • 20 Lefty // Dec 3, 2007 at 3:49 pm

Hey wait a minute. James didn’t answer if he was going.

  • 21 James Fee // Dec 3, 2007 at 3:52 pm

I didn’t answer because I still haven’t made up my mind.

  • 22 Al Pascual // Dec 3, 2007 at 4:04 pm

I’m going! Any chance you are going as well?

  • 23 Bill // Dec 3, 2007 at 4:21 pm

I’m going. James, if you show up, I’ll buy you a beer.

  • 24 Jimbo // Dec 3, 2007 at 4:22 pm

I’m going, but I’ll be honest. It isn’t for the sessions, but the fact my company will pay for me to spend a week in Palm Springs in March.

  • 25 Tim Maddle // Dec 3, 2007 at 6:16 pm

I’m not going, but if I was I’d like to see some advanced examples of programming for ArcGIS Explorer (is that the right name?). When they made a freely accessible download, I took another look at it and it is much improved in terms of speed and stability. AG Explorer could have strong merits as a delivery platform, although I don’t like it’s chances matched up against Google Earth and MSVE.

I’d be interested in information related to the .NET ADF, although it’s looking more and more like ArcGIS Server is a non-starter in my organization.

I guess the dev summit will be all about 9.3 …

  • 27 Dave Bouwman // Dec 4, 2007 at 8:21 am

I’m planning on being there, and hope to take many members of my team.
For me, I’m interested in the Javascript client, and other non-ADF ways of working with Server

As for the “Agile Cult” - it’s true and we’ll be brining robes for anyone who wants to join ;-)

  • 28 Bill // Dec 4, 2007 at 8:31 am

I’ll have my robes dry-cleaned first. I’m with you Dave, I wouldn’t do business any other way at this point.

  • 29 Brian Flood // Dec 5, 2007 at 4:55 am

I’ll be attending as well. I agree with Dave, the non ADF services that you can build with AGS and the REST api are very interesting. I think many of these types of services will be built using SqlServer 08 (for .Net devs anyway) but there is certainly functionality that requires AGS.

    cheers
    brian

  • 30 Anon // Dec 6, 2007 at 8:56 pm

OK, Brian Flood will be there. Dave Bouwman will be there. Bill Dollins will be there. That is almost all big bloggers who use ESRI. Something tells me James isn’t going to miss it so you can probably count him in.

  • 31 J // Dec 12, 2007 at 11:18 am

Wow, I have been so out of the loop for a while. Just getting back into things.

Yes I will be at the Developer Sumit along with my team.

  • 32 Dave Bouwman // Dec 12, 2007 at 7:15 pm

    @J -

Good to hear that you’re going to be coming - always nice to talk with an ArcGIS Server kung-fu master who’s got real world consulting experience!

    Cheers,

    Dave

  • 33 J // Dec 12, 2007 at 7:18 pm

    @Dave,

Yes it will be good to catch up with you and Brian and hopefully James is coming. I’m pretty sure he will :)

    All looking forward to it!
