GIS for Web Developers

I’ve been doing the traveling and then getting sick routine this week, but at least today when I got into work I saw that the GIS for Web Developers book showed up on my desk. I probably won’t be able to start reading it until next week because I have a couple friends coming in from Portola Hills, Orange County who narrowly avoided the Santiago Fire. They are Berkeley alumni so we are all going to go to the ASU-Cal game this weekend.

Seems like an interesting book that could be very informative for people looking to get into Open Source GIS web development. No mention of MapServer in the TOC, but there are at least two books that already focus partially or wholly on MapServer. There is a reference to GeoServer, which is another product I’ve had success with in a development environment. One thing that I like with MapServer versus GeoServer is the .NET flavor of Mapscript, which makes MapServer and ASP.NET a great combination.

I see the author already has a book about Google Maps API, and I have the “Pro” series Google Maps book. What’s really needed, and I’m sure will be along soon, is a VE book.

I couldn’t edit my previous comment in time, but if I were going to use GeoServer, I would probably not set it up as a publicly available WMS server, but actually have a web application pass through requests and return responses. That way, I think I’d have a better opportunity to track and control usage.

Spreading the virus. Do you think the CDC uses ESRI, Google Maps, Manifold, or …? to track the killer virus?

I had to Google it, but it looks like CDC has bought into a Microsoft/IDV S0lutions enterprise solution involving VE, Sharepoint, and who knows what else.
