The OSGeo Store

Lost in all the big celebration of the One Year Anniversary of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation I noticed that there is an OSGeo Store. Now you too can look smart wearing all that wonderful OSGeo clothing and even magnets! And for that special person in your life:

Update – At the risk of offending people at large on the internet, I’ve decided to remove the image above and toss it to the trash. sigh

That’s frightening, but not as frightening as http://pythong.org.

Call me old fashioned, but I for one am in no hurry to label the private parts of loved ones as “open source.”

Are you kidding me? You removed the thong because people were offended?

  6. Posted March 6, 2007 at 1:26 pm | Permalink

Actually OSGeo was offended. They asked nicely so I complied decided to remove it. There was no demand that I do anything, just that I think about the affect on the foundation. That is all I’m going to say about it.

    Let me get this strait…

OSGeo emailed you saying they were offended by the graphic? OK, this has made my day, the funniest thing I’ve heard all week.

    ROTFLMAO

Someone needs to post the thong on their blog

  9. Posted March 6, 2007 at 1:55 pm | Permalink

Wow, what a bunch of prudes. They should be thanking you for the publicity instead of worrying about trivial issues.

We also demand that all GIS users get down on their knees and kiss our feet, thanking us for bringing GIS to the masses.

I’ve sat in on their little meeting on IRC. This doesn’t surprise me at all. They are so tied up in their grandiose ideas about what OSGeo should be that they have no sense of reality.

It was only a matter of time before they made fools out of themselves.

Looks like someone posted the thong on another site.

Whenever companies try and do this it always backfires. At the rate James posts, it would have been off the front page in less than a week, now it will appear everywhere.

Actually the thong got me to start thinking about open source for the first time….

  15. Posted March 6, 2007 at 2:45 pm | Permalink

Right. Because the brown bag and all of the crossed out text are so much better publicity for the cause. Apparently they don’t read James enough to know how he’d comply. Come down from the ivory tower guys. It was a joke.

Hi all, Sorry for the misunderstanding, but no one demanded anything. James was just being kind when I (Tyler) expressed concern. The thong was actually removed from our store early on because some members were offended by the idea. So to have a graphic that implies we actually sell those was misleading, that was all.

Has open source GIS jumped the shark when they are worried about thongs?

Sounds to me, if Tyle is correct. All James had to do was add a disclaimer or footnote when he posted the image. That way, there isn’t anything misleading. :)

Bring back the thong!! Now I have the thong song in my head…….

James felt that if the image offended people, it should be removed.

James is also envious of those whose life is so easy that they can get offended by such images.

  22. Posted March 7, 2007 at 10:55 pm | Permalink

    Wow.

Let’s make this clear. OSGeo wasn’t offended. Someone speaking on behalf of OSGeo (right or wrong) was.

For me (speaking on behalf of myself, rather than OSGeo, because I haven’t polled the membership) I am disappointed that this happened.

As an organisation that is founded on the principle of freedom, it is disconcerting to see any sentiment that curtails freedom of expression, as James was clearly exercising in his post.

Personally, I found it funny. I actually thought that we still had the thong in our store, and am sorry to hear that it had been removed. If we can’t make fun of ourselves, we deserve a reputation for being full of ourselves.

That said, I don’t agree with anon’s comment about grandiose vs. reality. A majority of the membership is working hard towards some very achievable goals. And we can always use some more help.
