The GIS Discussion

July 13th, 2006 · 5 Comments · GIS

Blog baby!I’ve gotten a couple people asking me why I haven’t said much about the blog conversation topic that Dave, Adena, Allan and Frank have touched on. I’ve been traveling the last couple days and haven’t even been able to check me email, let alone read Planet GS.

I think everyone has pretty much hit on the major points of the discussion. I know there are many more people here that lurk than post on my blog and there isn’t anything wrong with that. When people feel they have something to add to the conversation, I’m sure they’ll do it. I do get comments that people seem to feel more comfortable emailing me than posting on my blog. So there are usually side conversations that happen that people never hear about. We’ll see how this progresses over the next year, but given where the GIS blog community was at this time in 2005, I think we’ll see great progress by 2007.

I haven’t searched the entire agenda but I doubt there’s a session at this years UC on blogging and other social networking aspects of the GIS community. It would be interesting to get a few active bloggers and lurkers together on a panel to discuss how it can add value to the profession.

Maybe a bunch of us can get together offline at UC2006 discuss a UC2007 panel.

Count me among the lurkers on your site James. I’m thinking that the majority of blog readers shy away from comments since we’re visiting the site to get quick news updates only. Call it short attention span/ADD, but I browse the GIS blogs mainly to stay on top of happenings in the mapping world. I’ll only drop a comment if the discussion warrants. Thanks for the site…keep up the good work!

Last year at the ESRI UC we had a blogger meetup that had a good turnout. At Where this year, I tried to get one going but there was a lot of stuff going on and I stood it up at the last minute. So, now I have two questions for everyone: 1) When during the UC do we want to have a blogger meet up, and, 2) should we get a blogger panel up and running at the last minute?

I can try to pull some strings to get the blogger panel on the conference agenda at the last minute if we want to. Because it sounds like James may be there, Dave Maguire, Ed Parsons, me, and a number of other geobloggers.

I just caught some free wireless at the airport before my flight, and thought I’d drop a comment in here re: the UC.

If yoiu can organize a meet-up that would be great (I won’t be there this year). But also mention blogging to as many ESRI employees as you can - try to let them know yoiur ideas on this - I’m assuming that we’d all welcome more participation on their part, but whatever yoiur thoughts - let them know.

    Cheers!

I won’t be at the UC either but the meetup last year was a lot of fun. Make sure the tradition continues!

    cheers
