zigGIS 2.0 Coming Soon

December 19th, 2007 · 7 Comments · ArcGIS Desktop, ArcSDE, ESRI, Open Source, PostGIS, PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL is about to get really integrated into ArcGIS workflows in 2008. First and foremost, the zigGIS codebase will remain [...]

Create GIS Workstation Using Ubuntu and Open Source GIS Software

October 22nd, 2007 · 34 Comments · GRASS, Mapserver, OSGeo, Open Source, PostGIS, PostgreSQL, QGIS

I get tons of emails from people asking where they can get free ArcView licenses for home use. People really want to work with GIS at home as well as at work which makes sense to me. I’ve always pointed folks to QGIS and other tools, but Matt Perry has a wonderful and [...]

Open Source on the Beach at Waikiki

October 1st, 2007 · 25 Comments · ArcGIS Desktop, ArcSDE, ESRI, Extensions, GRASS, Mapserver, OSGeo, Open Source, PostGIS, PostgreSQL, QGIS

I’m “stuck” in Waikiki this week at our Honolulu office helping them get back on track with their GIS after our GIS coordinator resigned to join her husband in the peace corps on Tonga. The new GIS person is really excited about GIS and that is always nice to be around. Sometimes even [...]

May 15th, 2007 · 3 Comments · Google, Google Earth, Microsoft, Open Source, PostGIS, Virtual Earth

I’m not going to FOSS4G 2007 (nor any other conference this summer), but I’m keeping my eye out for interesting talks. This one by Brian Timoney looks like it will be a presentation not to miss.
Adding Analytic Muscle to Spinning Globes: Bulking Up Google Earth and Virtual Earth With PostGIS

World Wind Java + GeoServer + PostGIS = ?

May 14th, 2007 · 7 Comments · GeoServer, Microsoft, NASA World Wind, Open Source, OpenLayers, PostGIS, Virtual Earth

Steve says it all via IM:
its all about geoserver, postgis, WWJ, and openlayers
He’s probably right. Between that combination and SQL Server 2008 + VE, we have to very impressive platforms for those who want to program in Java or .NET.

Post Your Favorite Open Source Web Mapping Sites

April 27th, 2007 · 9 Comments · GIS, GeoRSS, MapGuide, Mapserver, OSGeo, Open Source, OpenLayers, PostGIS

As was suggested in the ESRI Web Mapping Sites post, post your favorite open source web mapping sites. One of my favorite sites is the OpenStreetMap project. I’m a sucker for Open Layers, but the concept and implementation of OpenStreetMap as a whole is wonderful.

Paul Ramsey on PostGIS for SDE

December 5th, 2006 · 4 Comments · ArcSDE, ESRI, GIS, PostGIS, PostgreSQL

Paul has been thinking about the announcement that ESRI would allow ArcSDE to use PostgreSQL and has up with a pretty good argument on why ESRI should make PostGIS the default spatial type.
One of the interesting nuggets to come out of the ESRI User Conference this year was the news that ESRI was going to [...]

Open Source GIS Is About the Users

August 28th, 2006 · 5 Comments · GIS, OSGeo, Open Source, PostGIS, QGIS

Steve noticed a post by Asa Dotzler about Paul Ramsey assertion that open source GIS is about developers, not users.
You may have failed (or decided not to even try) to build a product for users and to attract users to that product, but that hardly qualifies you to hand down edicts about what open source [...]

PostGIS and the Open Source Geospatial Foundation

February 6th, 2006 · No Comments · GIS, OSGeo, Open Source, PostGIS

Paul Ramsey has a good post on his thinking to why PostGIS might not be part of the OSGF in at least the near future.
Does making the projects look better help us enough to offset the loss of direct project/company linkage?
I’d guess at least right now the OSGF has more to gain from the inclusion [...]

PostGIS 1.1.1 Has Been Released

January 23rd, 2006 · 2 Comments · GIS, PostGIS

PostGIS 1.1.1 is now available up on their website. It appears to be a minor release so I’m not sure if we’ll be rushing out to update just yet. Then again my DBA hasn’t been one to not pass up an update. Still waiting for locking and mult-versioning, but maybe that [...]
