The ArcGIS Server RESTful API will come out at 9.3, but what about those who need it now? Well Dave Bouwman has blogged about its release. Because we all love demos, here is the link to the ArcGIS Server RESTful API.

Bringing Open Source GIS Into an “ESRI Shop”
February 5th, 2008 · 83 Comments · ArcGIS Server, ESRI, FeatureServer, GDAL/OGR, Google, Google Earth, Google Maps, Microsoft, Open Source, OpenLayers, Virtual Earth
I don’t like the term “ESRI Shop”. Both open source developers and ESRI developers use it as an excuse one way or another. Just because you are running ArcMap or ArcGIS Server, doesn’t mean that you can’t explore open source GIS software and in fact you might be surprised how it makes your [...]

Mapping the Poles

So how the heck are you guys doing it? Google Maps and Virtual Earth have so much distortion up there (or down there as the case may be) that mapping is very difficult. Plus what happens when they navigate off the edge of the map? Anyway the closest thing I’ve found [...]

November 20th, 2007 · 41 Comments · ArcSDE, ESRI, Microsoft, OpenLayers, SQL Server, Virtual Earth
I just got this tidbit of information from a friend who talked to Ed Katibah (lead Program Manager for SQL Spatial).
Spatial datatype, methods and indexes will be supported equally on all SQL Server editions (Express, Workgroup, Standard and Enterprise) at no extra charge. That means anyone who wants to use the SQL Server 2008 [...]

Coming Up for Air
October 31st, 2007 · 95 Comments · FeatureServer, Open Source, OpenLayers
I’ve been so busy working on a 3D modeling job for the Navy that I haven’t had a second to blog. I’m usually pretty good about posting fast (if you can’t figured out, I can type faster than I can think), but these last few weeks have been tough.
I’ve been thinking about how to [...]

GIS Analysis for the Masses

I’ve been playing with Christopher Schmidt’s WPServer demonstration and I have to say it really makes me think about where GIS is going. Simply put, you can perform GIS analysis simply by clicking button on a simple web interface using all open source software. Jason Birch has a nice writeup on what you [...]

World Wind Java + GeoServer + PostGIS = ?

Steve says it all via IM:
its all about geoserver, postgis, WWJ, and openlayers
He’s probably right. Between that combination and SQL Server 2008 + VE, we have to very impressive platforms for those who want to program in Java or .NET.

Post Your Favorite Open Source Web Mapping Sites

As was suggested in the ESRI Web Mapping Sites post, post your favorite open source web mapping sites. One of my favorite sites is the OpenStreetMap project. I’m a sucker for Open Layers, but the concept and implementation of OpenStreetMap as a whole is wonderful.

I’ve been beta testing A2E publisher for the past week and I have to say I’m in love with it. The ability to take ANY ArcMap view or layout and publish it to Google Maps, Virtual Earth (3D Included), OpenLayers and of course KML. Just publish and A2E creates a webpage to send [...]
