OSGeo Jobs List

March 5th, 2008 · 17 Comments · OSGeo, Open Source

Looks like the OSGeo Jobs email list is needing some help.
As of today, still only one job is being offered — surely there are
more out there that people should be made aware of?!
I already posted about my thoughts on the email list so I won’t go over them again, but even I’m amazed [...]

February 13th, 2008 · 9 Comments · OSGeo

I’ve been following the discussion on the OSGeo mailing list about setting up an “open source jobs list” and it looks like it is now live.
FOSS4G Related Jobs and Resumes
I’m not sure why they feel the need for such a list rather than work with existing job posting sites, but I guess this has to [...]

Create GIS Workstation Using Ubuntu and Open Source GIS Software

October 22nd, 2007 · 34 Comments · GRASS, Mapserver, OSGeo, Open Source, PostGIS, PostgreSQL, QGIS

I get tons of emails from people asking where they can get free ArcView licenses for home use. People really want to work with GIS at home as well as at work which makes sense to me. I’ve always pointed folks to QGIS and other tools, but Matt Perry has a wonderful and [...]

Open Source on the Beach at Waikiki

October 1st, 2007 · 25 Comments · ArcGIS Desktop, ArcSDE, ESRI, Extensions, GRASS, Mapserver, OSGeo, Open Source, PostGIS, PostgreSQL, QGIS

I’m “stuck” in Waikiki this week at our Honolulu office helping them get back on track with their GIS after our GIS coordinator resigned to join her husband in the peace corps on Tonga. The new GIS person is really excited about GIS and that is always nice to be around. Sometimes even [...]

Portable GIS: GIS on a USB Stick

September 27th, 2007 · 12 Comments · GIS, OSGeo, Open Source

I’ve blogged about putting GIS applications on USB memory sticks in the past, but there seems to be some traction going on with this. Jo Cook presented at FOSS4G2007 a talk about Portable GIS. Jo has followed up with a blog post about the talk:
Thanks to everyone who attended my talk at FOSS4G [...]

September 19th, 2007 · 3 Comments · OSGeo, Open Source

Tyler Mitchell (Editor in Chief, OSGeo Journal) has announced in the OSGeo Discuss email list that the OSGeo Journal Volume 2 is now available for reading/download. I really enjoyed reading Volume 1 and while I don’t have time right now to read Volume 2, I see that there is an article on MapWindow which [...]

I’m sure most of you got the news yesterday that MapServer 5.0.0 has been released. The change log is available here for those who want to see what has been fixed/added [...]

ESRI ArcGIS Users Guide to MetaCarta Labs on a Stick

May 28th, 2007 · 2 Comments · ESRI, FeatureServer, OSGeo, Open Source

No sooner than I posted the screenshots of MetaCarta on a stick, did I get an email from an ArcGIS user asking how they heck do they get to “install” and play with such a tool. Well as luck would have it, ESRI took care of the hardest part of running MetaCarta Labs on [...]

Post Your Favorite Open Source Web Mapping Sites

April 27th, 2007 · 9 Comments · GIS, GeoRSS, MapGuide, Mapserver, OSGeo, Open Source, OpenLayers, PostGIS

As was suggested in the ESRI Web Mapping Sites post, post your favorite open source web mapping sites. One of my favorite sites is the OpenStreetMap project. I’m a sucker for Open Layers, but the concept and implementation of OpenStreetMap as a whole is wonderful.

Community Participation in MapGuide Open Source

November 28th, 2006 · 8 Comments · GIS, MapGuide, OSGeo, Open Source

I’ve been getting more and more .NET developers talking to me about my MapGuide Open Source move over the holiday. Seems like many ArcIMS developers are downloading and checking out MapGuide, trying to get away from the ArcGIS Server/Desktop conflict (they have to develop on 9.1, but their IT department wants to roll out [...]

More ESRI to Open Source

October 17th, 2006 · 1 Comment · ESRI, GIS, Mapserver, OSGeo, Open Source

I got a trackback from a new blog from an ESRI user who is attempting to migrate over to open source. He/She doesn’t seem to be a Linux pro so this might be a good blog reference for those thinking of making the migration.

In the past month I’ve had 4 people tell me that they are probably not going to be using ESRI Server (ArcGIS Server, ArcIMS, ArcSDE) on their projects unless their clients specifically demand it. I’m not talking about 4 people off the street here, but ESRI MVP types. When asked why they felt [...]

Open Source GIS Is About the Users

August 28th, 2006 · 5 Comments · GIS, OSGeo, Open Source, PostGIS, QGIS

Steve noticed a post by Asa Dotzler about Paul Ramsey assertion that open source GIS is about developers, not users.
You may have failed (or decided not to even try) to build a product for users and to attract users to that product, but that hardly qualifies you to hand down edicts about what open source [...]

State of .NET Open Source GIS

July 28th, 2006 · 13 Comments · GIS, OSGeo, Open Source

Morten Nielsen read Refractions Research’s “The State of Open Source GIS” white paper and wondered why Paul Ramsey categorized open source GIS as either C or Java. I think Paul only wrote about the open source GIS clique that revolves around Refractions and OSGeo rather than the state of open source GIS as a [...]
