So What Did I Learn at the Western United States Manifold Users Conference?

January 20th, 2008 · 10 Comments · GIS, Manifold

I had a great time at the WUSMUC and meeting lots of Manifold users. It was interesting to learn that the user conference is not sponsored by Manifold (well technically Manifold is a sponsor but of the user created conference), but a user driven event. Users of Manifold came from all over the [...]

At the Western U.S. Manifold User Conference

January 18th, 2008 · 19 Comments · Manifold

I’m sitting down right now at the Manifold User Conference. I’m under a NDA so I can’t really report much on the future of Manifold, but I’ll let you know some examples of what people are doing with Manifold.

Western United States Manifold Users Conference

January 4th, 2008 · 12 Comments · Manifold

As some have already posted, I was invited to the Western United States Manifold Users Conference, January 18th and 19th down the road in Mesa, AZ. Looking at the presentation abstracts, I should be able to get a real education as to how people are using Manifold in their geospatial projects. Seeing how [...]

I’m sure many of us on the MapDotNet email list got the news that full support for SQL Server 2008 Spatial is right around the corner.
MapDotNet Server 6.5 is currently undergoing beta testing and will be released in November 2007. In addition to support for SQL Server 2008, it will provide support for the new [...]

There has been an upswing in Manifold comments and it appears that people need to get it out of their system. So rather than every post become Manifold v. XXXXX, post it here.

Manifold Returns

June 14th, 2007 · 16 Comments · Manifold

We’ve been kicked out of our office building due to a bomb scare at the bus station below. What does any respected GIS professional do in that situation? Grabs his laptop and a copy of Manifold. I figured I might as well get Manifold reinstalled and give it another try.

The Manifold Thread

April 18th, 2007 · 22 Comments · GIS, Manifold

Since there seems to be a huge need for people to debate Manifold vs ESRI vs Open Source vs Autodesk vs ________, I’m opening this thread for you folks to get your anger out. To get you started, I leave you with a picture of Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry and Mike Tyson.

Searching GIS on Google

Interesting*

Use Google Earth Pro - A software solution for viewing GIS data
Hmm, for about half the cost of Google Earth Pro, you could have Manifold…

* Fortunately searching for Goo doesn’t not result in Google trying to pimp their Goo….

Taking a gander though my referrers, I see that a new Manifold “fan blog” has started up. Manifold = God? has the tagline “Searching for the Ultimate Truth about Manifold GIS, the Best GIS the World has Ever Seen, and Ever Will See…”. I’m subscribed!

Looks like I wasn’t the first to notice [...]

Fighting Manifold (or Fighting the Way I’ve Learned GIS)

December 21st, 2006 · 108 Comments · Manifold

I feel like I have to forget everything I know about using GIS when I’m in Manifold. I’ll be honest, I can’t figure anything out without the help. Everything I know seems to be done differently. Based on a couple of folks suggestion, I’m going to be going over the GISAdvisor videos [...]

Creating a Simple Map in Manifold

December 15th, 2006 · 54 Comments · GIS, Manifold

I’ve decided to just throw everything out and begin with the basics of Manifold. The first thing I think would be to create a simple map. When you open up Manifold 7x you see the following:

The project tab on the right is somewhat like the “Solution Explorer” in Visual Studio, but a little [...]

Initial Manifold Experience

December 13th, 2006 · 31 Comments · GIS, Manifold

Installing Manifold was pretty easy as I had .NET already installed. After running Manifold for the first time, Manifold let me know there was an update and I had to uninstall the version I just installed and then reinstall the update. I like it when Setup applications check before installing rather than this [...]

Manifold a “Train Wreck”. Can It Be True?

December 1st, 2006 · 83 Comments · GIS, Manifold

Matt has some issues with both Manifold itself and the quality of its online help (or lack there of; love the redirect to an IP address on the forums, quite professional).
The reason we bought Manifold was to have a GIS in which to create nice maps of our large datasets in an easy way and [...]

There is a new beta release of the Manifold toolbar. See

Manifold Toolbar?

Are you kidding me? What is this 1999? Oh but of course as The Earth is Square points out, it all has to do with giving Google the middle finger.
manifold.net recommends use of Microsoft Virtual Earth (the default installation) instead of Google servers for several reasons:

So What Did We Learn?

Given that I’ve let everyone let off a little steam in my comments in regards to Manifold vs Open Source vs ArcGIS, what can we glean from what transpired?
Plain and simple, all software sucks (and I say this as a software developer). On top of that, life is too short to get worked up [...]

What the hell, lets continue posting about Manifold. I know both the NASA World Wind team and others have been wondering how they heck Manifold can be allowed to use the Google when they aren’t. Well that has changed (via Bull’s rambles):
Just prior to the release of 7x, Google lawyers contacted manifold.net to [...]
