Bringing Open Source GIS Into an “ESRI Shop”

February 5th, 2008 · 83 Comments · ArcGIS Server, ESRI, FeatureServer, GDAL/OGR, Google, Google Earth, Google Maps, Microsoft, Open Source, OpenLayers, Virtual Earth

I don’t like the term “ESRI Shop”. Both open source developers and ESRI developers use it as an excuse one way or another. Just because you are running ArcMap or ArcGIS Server, doesn’t mean that you can’t explore open source GIS software and in fact you might be surprised how it makes your [...]

ESRI Podcast - 2008 Developer Summit: Building Mash-Ups Using the ArcGIS Server JavaScript API

February 4th, 2008 · 1 Comment · ArcGIS Server, ESRI, Google, Google Maps, Microsoft, Virtual Earth

OK here is the other part of the ArcGIS Server 9.3 release that most of us will be interested in; the Javascript API. Jeremy Bartley and Jayant Sai talk a little about the Javascript API in their podcast. Much like the RESTful API Podcast, there isn’t much meat here, but at least you [...]

ESRI Podcast - ArcGIS Server REST API

February 2nd, 2008 · 7 Comments · ArcGIS Server, ESRI, Google, Google Maps, Microsoft, Virtual Earth

I’m sure this is just a coincidence, but ESRI actually posted a discussion of the REST API for ArcGIS Server. In addition they hit on the three Javascript APIs that they will also release with the REST API; ESRI Javascript API using Dojo, Extender Javascript Library for Google Maps and Extender Javascript Library for [...]

Mapping the Poles

January 31st, 2008 · 14 Comments · ArcWeb, ESRI, Google, Google Maps, Microsoft, Open Source, OpenLayers, Virtual Earth

So how the heck are you guys doing it? Google Maps and Virtual Earth have so much distortion up there (or down there as the case may be) that mapping is very difficult. Plus what happens when they navigate off the edge of the map? Anyway the closest thing I’ve found [...]

Web Mapping Systems and Services

January 8th, 2008 · 22 Comments · ArcWeb, ESRI, GIS, Google, Google Maps, MapDotNet Server, MapPoint, Microsoft, Virtual Earth

I spent most of the afternoon talking with folks about web mapping systems and how to choose a direction to go. What is painfully obvious when you start laying out the different frameworks, APIs and servers is that there is just no clear answer as to what system to pick. When it comes [...]

College Football Team Travel Maps

December 20th, 2007 · 10 Comments · GIS, Google, Google Maps

MapGameDay.com has a new section called the Travel Map. The section contains conference and team road game data collected for regular season games from the 1998 through the 2007 NCAA Football schedule. As you might guess, any conference with a team in Hawaii would probably lead the rankings in miles traveled and the WAC [...]

More Google Street View Coverage

October 9th, 2007 · 26 Comments · Google, Google Maps

Looks like the Google Van was driving around the Valley of the Sun taking pictures because Phoenix/Tempe now has Google Street View images.

Google took plenty of pictures of my sons pre-school which somewhat freaked my wife out, but they didn’t make it into our neighborhood. We’ll see how the Phoenix press reacts to the [...]

Finally Google Maps Becomes Useful

June 28th, 2007 · 15 Comments · Google, Google Maps

The day I can spend an hour fighting Google Maps to get a route that covers all lower 48 states is the day I’m finally a Google Maps convert. Typing in city name is for wimps. Dragging that blue line all over the country, now that is GIS baby!

Sure it isn’t efficient, but [...]

“Find Place” In ArcGIS Explorer Still Doesn’t Work Correctly

May 1st, 2007 · No Comments · ArcGIS Explorer, ESRI, Google, Google Earth, Google Maps, Microsoft, Virtual Earth

This has been a pet peeve of mine and its not just a problem with ESRI ArcGIS Explorer. Google has the search figured out just about perfectly. Give the user one text box to enter in their search query and return results. Microsoft’s Virtual Earth has not gotten this right yet.

I don’t [...]

Using Online Mapping While Trying to Find a Dream House

February 7th, 2007 · 18 Comments · GIS, Google, Google Earth, Google Maps

I had a problem. I sold my house about a month ago (which is good in this market) but hadn’t found a place to buy. Taking the raw MLS results and using online mapping tools to see relationships between houses/schools/roads/airports/railroads/etc is harder than it should be.
First off I figured I’d just do it [...]

Google Maps for iPhone - Hardly Revolutionary….

January 9th, 2007 · 5 Comments · GIS, Google, Google Maps

I will admit the implementation that Apple and Google came up with for the iPhone and Google Maps is quite impressive, but my wife’s Blackberry has had Google Maps access for just about a year now (the scroll wheel actually works pretty well if you ask me). Heck no need to wait until June [...]

Mining Claims Site Powered by Google Maps and Google Earth

As many can attest, mining is big business in the west. Right in Arizona, we have some of the largest copper mines in the world and one of the largest copper mining companies headquartered here. School children learn about the “5 C’s” of Arizona (Climate, Citrus, Cotton, Cattle and Copper) and it is [...]

Image History in Google Earth/Maps

Google Imagery Update, but I Am Still Not Happy
