ArcGIS 9.3.1 Roundup

Well got my copy late last week and others are reporting that they’ve received it as well.  9.3.1 isn’t revolutionary, more evolutionary in nature so there isn’t that, “I MUST HAVE IT” feeling with it.  And you know what?  That is exactly what we need at this point, a nice solid release.

Some blog posts about 9.3.1:

I’m sure we’ll see more information in the next week.  Remember you can get the “What’s new in 9.3.1″ from ESRI’s servers.  We haven’t installed it yet, but hopefully there will be a chance later this week.

ArcGIS 9.3.1 is on its way. YEAH!

ArcGIS 9.3.1.... YEAH!

Actually this is a MUST HAVE IT release. Before 9.3.1 dynamic map services were slow and laughable (well no laughing matter if your job depended on good performance). Now I can say it really is faster than ArcIMS. If ESRI would now just get a packaged metadata server solution I could boot ArcIMS to the curb.

Looks like the Windows 7 installation blog is down. I’m really curious about this. I work for a government agency. We are still using XP and ArcGIS 9.2. We’re trying to roll out 9.3, but it is only on about 30-50% of our systems. I have no idea when we’re going to upgrade our OS. I’m hoping that we jump right to Windows 7 and skip Vista entirely. I’m probably hoping for too much. They take years to approve software. Stupid government. :D

well, 9.3.1 Desktop runs just fine under Vista x64 so it will run just fine in Windows 7 considering 7 is nothing more than destigmatized Vista.

Seeing as we were promised “Fast Access to Microsoft Virtual Earth Maps and Imagery” I was frustrated that info about how to actually get this stuff up and running was so hard to come by.
If it saves anyone from similar pain, for a Single Use installation you have to log into service.esri.com, go to Product Registration, enter your current license number and then at the bottom of a list of extensions you’ll see “Customers with current maintenance may get a Virtual Earth extension registration number” with a hyperlink. THAT’s how you get the registration number.
Then you have to use the Desktop Administrator/Registration Wizard to enter that registration number; then you can visit the resource center for ArcGIS Online and under the VE stuff download a starter mxd or layers.
    Simple eh?
ESRI managed to include a postcard telling me they were pleased to send the update DVDs – a couple of extra paragraphs about the VE stuff would have really made my day.

We installed 9.3.1. We were impressed with the faster ArcGIS server apps that we created. To take advantage of the faster web maps you now convert your mxd to a an msd file. Unfortunately, if you have an event layer that is based on a table, you are out of luck. It won’t convert the mxd. I guess we will have to remove that table and create a service with the remaining data. That service will be based on an msd. Then we will take that table and put it in its own service that will be based on an mxd. In the end, we will get it to work but I guess we won’t be truly leveraging the speed of 9.3.1.

There is a fairly substantial issue using ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 and ArcGIS Server ArcPad Extension 8.0. The crux of the matter is “All map services are stopped and are unable to be restarted.” See link below for the workaround. Otherwise I am very happy with 9.3.1.

I was playing with the new MSD files and guess what, they are really just zipped up XML files. Seems actually pretty similar to the office 2007 format. This means you can actually make changes to the layers in the optimized map service by writing XML. I guess it’s not supported by ESRI, since there isn’t a schema or any documentation. I wonder if they plan to release that someday?
