Honestly I would just like them to make up their minds. MapInfo has a huge meaning to most of us in the professional GIS world even if we don’t currently or ever used the software, but you can bet my 98 year old Grandmother knows Pitney Bowes.
Hey, don’t take chances, take Pitney Bowes.

That is assuming that everyone in the world knows who/what Pitney Bowes are/ do? Living in Australia, I think we are more familar with the name Mapinfo than Pitney Bowes (call me ignorant but I still don’t know what PB do or what their niche market is) and I think, like many people do that losing the name Mapinfo would be detrimental to the product.

Hey, Pitney Bowes is a Fortune 500 company. I think anyone over 40 probably has used a Pitney Bowes mailing station or at least a fax machine.
Might as well get familiar with your local Pitney Bowes representative.

I agree with FP… even if it is a F500 company.. Who in overseas (i.e. not in North-America) knows it? The first time I heard of Pitney B was 2 months ago or so due to your blog.
Big does not mean global.. or maybe they use a different name. E.g. have you ever heard of “Deutsche Post AG”? …the largest logistics company in the world (owning other companies such as DHL).
So I would say MapInfo is rather a brand in the GIS community than Pitney B.

I appreciate Vincent and Mentaer’s comments, and even FP’s humor. PB is certainly better known inside the US than outside, and even in the US has operated “in the background” for decades. But we’re in some surprising places now: think eBay (online postage for eBay sellers to ship goods to buyers). MapInfo is a gem of an acquisition that is moving PB into new technologies to offer existing and new customers. The branding will come over time.

What happened to the team behind Vertical Mapper. They were a separate company (over in Oz perhaps?) and the only time I use MI is for DTM/Grid work as I think its superior to 3d/spatial analyst from esri.
Be interesting to see if they continue to support MI under PB.
