Great catch….according to Amazon:”…you’ll become a real geographic programmer using the Java programming language.”
Somewhere in Redmond, a business partner manager is reaching for a phone …

Also according to Amazon, under “Better Together”, you’ll do better if you also get “Beginning Google Maps Applications with PHP and Ajax”.

Can’t say I’ve read this book, but the Pragmatic Programmer series tend to be really good - and Andy Hunt (guy who started PP) is awesome. I’ve seen him speak a few times, and certainly worth it if you get the chance.

“Beginning Google Maps Applications with PHP and Ajax” is a good read but I personally think there is enough PHP tutorials/literature online from Google and others to learn GM & PHP/AJAX.
Ive ordered the book above, thanks for pointing it out.

It is a good book. There is some ESRI in there, specifically ArcExplorer.

GIS4WD is a great introduction to open-source web mapping, with not a line of Java in it as far as I can tell. Lots of stuff on OGC standards, GeoServer, PostGIS and so on. I’m working my way through it as preparation for my MSc project in GIS and it’s good stuff. I’d recommend it highly, except most of you GIS guys probably know all this stuff already.
