I like that ESRI has started to focus on getting ArcIMS developers ready for their eventual move to ArcGIS Server. There is a podcast up describing the “ArcGIS Server for ArcIMS Developers” session at the Developer Summit.
ESRI has no ArcIMS technical sessions planned for the 2008 Dev Summit so everyone should take that as a sign as the future of ArcIMS. Time to migrate folks.

Alternate caption:
ArcIMS gives ArcGIS Server a reassuring pat on the back.
“I don’t care what they say about you, your mother will always love you.”
Just kidding. I know sometimes I go rough on good old ESRI.

It’s nice to think ESRI is supportive of ArcIMS to ArcGIS migration — IMO, it would have been better if they dedicated more effort making ArcIMS better while it was ArcIMS.
I have a 10 year history with ESRI products and all the web map applications in my future will involve Geoserver, OpenLayers, Post-GIS, etc - I hope :)… ESRI owns the desktop, not the internet.

The concern I had was in ArcGIS Server’s performance. As long as it took ridiculous amounts of horsepower and/or wasn’t as fast and responsive as an ArcIMS implementation, then for just serving up lightweight mapping layers, folks like me were inclined to keep ArcIMS for static map layers and hybridize with ArcGIS Server providing the analysis and heavier lifting.
Hearing encouraging things from ESRI about ArcGIS Server’s performance as it continues to evolve, but as always, will be happier SEEING it.
