I’ve been getting a demonstration ready to go for a client using MapDotNet Server (MDNS) and figured it was a great time to update to the latest version. Version 6.5 was released December 17, 2007 and is a huge update. Improvements include:
- Now uses Microsoft’s Windows Communication Foundation (WCF)
- Support for the November CTP of SQL Server 2008
- Support for Oracle 10g and 11g
- MapServer 5.0 support for AGG rendering
- Improved VE Template II
There is a lot more than that and you can read the whole release notes here.

So James, what are your thoughts on MapDotNet versus IDV?
Have you looked at AWhere or SpatialPoint yet?

“The SDE Web Connector is a .NET web service that allows you to insert, update and delete points, lines and simple polygon features in your spatial data through ArcSDE.” If you do want to edit SDE data through a web interface, it might make more sense to get AGS standard and MDNS instead of AGS Advanced, which is quite a bit more expensive than AGS standard.
On the MapServer side, I hope they still support the old image formats in addition to the AGG renderer, since I’m finding that the AGG image formats render significantly slower than the GD format.
