Geocoding in Europe With batchgeocode.com

October 18th, 2007 · 8 Comments · GIS

Phillip Holmstrand let me know that with Yahoo Maps now supporting geocoding in Europe his online geocoding website, batchgeocode.com, now supports many European addresses.

Now you can geocode and get map coordinates for these countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, France, and Italy

It appears there is somewhat limited support for these countries: Albania, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, The Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia/Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey.

That is great news. I tried our Germany office and it worked perfectly. Now bulk geocoding is not limited to North America. You can find out more at his blog and he’s looking for suggestions or comments about the European support, leave them on his blog.

    I’ve made some tests with sample data between the google vs yahoo api for geocoding, it shows up that google api is for now much better than yahoo api in the european countryside areas. Results are posted on georezo.net …

    Bill G,

    Just buy ESRI and get it over with. We know you want to.

    This site needs to offer GeoRSS export so it can feed into VE.

    Countries in Europe are making great strides technologically. One country has impressed me more than others, is Estonia. They have done well economically as well. I just saw a website about Estonia’s Singing Revolution – http://singingrevolution.com; this is quite inspirational.

    I just checked the Yahoo license and the batchgeocoder site seems to be quite dubious in that respect except for the use in integrated Yahoo maps. E.g. exporting to KML is in clear violation of the terms.

    From http://developer.yahoo.com/maps/mapsTerms.html:

    YOU SHALL NOT:

    (viii) store or allow end users to store map imagery, map data or geocoded location information from the Yahoo! Maps APIs for any future use;

    (ix) use the stand-alone geocoder for any use other than displaying Yahoo! Maps or displaying points on Yahoo! Maps;

    (x) publish or display, or allow other users to publish or display, any geocoded location information using any Yahoo! Maps APIs; or

    (xi) use the Yahoo! Maps APIs in a product or service that competes with products or services offered by Yahoo!.

    Yeah well that’s all fine and dandy and much of the functionality is clearly violating the Yahoo Maps API terms of use that for instance disallows using the results of geocoding for anything except display in Yahoo Maps.

    Reality check anyone?

    If you’d like to try a desktop geocoder, Aliwal Geocode might be useful. It’s open source and uses Yahoo maps & geocoding API too.
