MapsForUs.Org to the Rescue

August 29th, 2007 · 12 Comments · GIS

All U.S. Americans took it on the chin when Miss South Carolina tried to answer a question about U.S. American’s mapping abilities, but a new website has stepped in to being U.S. American’s children the maps they need.

The children of the US America are in deep trouble. Because some people out there don’t have maps. Such as South Africa. Therefore, you must email us maps to make it better. EMAIL: maps AT mapsforus.org. Our views of Attack of the Show’s webpage will encourage our children to believe that there is a future outside of Asia. A future with maps. And such. South Africa.

The comments section is wonderful and this type of grassroots effort might actually help U.S. American’s mapping deficiencies.

The website is back up!

Update: No sooner than I post this, but the website has gone down. The Google cache gives you a little insight into what you are missing.

At least Miss South Carolina did with with Matt Lauer asking the questions.

We must fight the maps here, so we don’t have to fight them in South Africa

She’s lucky that in U.S. America you’ll get further, faster being good looking rather than smart.

She better enjoy and use her youth for all it’s worth. If I was a betting man, age won’t treat her well.

The site was up for a minute now its back down.
It had some great maps, from old video games, to directions for the plumber.

In all fairness to Miss SC…

    A. Did anybody find out where that statistic even came from yet?

    B. Are there any comparable stats from foreign countries whose education stats are ‘reliable’?

    C. If I were her age and with her, I am fairly certain the only geography we would be discussing would be countours…

If you look at the education system in South African and China you will know that all American children come from places that really all South African and Vietnam children obtain free as part of the welfare system than has it’s roots with American and Iraq forces deep rooted in the Kenyan education and health and human services industry.

Pinpointing North America on a Map Is a Breeze
Nearly all (94%) young Americans can find the United States on the world map, and Canada
(92%) and Mexico (88%) are nearly as familiar. Wide majorities can find bordering bodies of
water including the Pacific Ocean (79%) and the Gulf of Mexico (75%). Trends from 2002
suggest that more young adults can pick out Canada and Mexico (with few signs of change for
other countries). However, it is concerning that one in ten of those with up to a high school
education cannot identify the U.S., and one in five cannot find the Pacific Ocean.

    Miss SC Teen USA’s answer:

“I personally believe that US Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and that I believe our education, such as in South Africa and the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should our education over here in the US should help the US, or should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future.”
