The United Countries of Baseball Map

August 3rd, 2007 · 15 Comments · Uncategorized

I love baseball, I admit it. I subscribe to MLB.tv to catch as many games as I can. My favorite “computer related book” is Baseball Hacks. In the spirit of that, I present the United Countries of Baseball Map.

I’d rethink the Yankees boundary. I was in Baltimore last week when the Yankees were in town and it was practically another home series for the Yanks. :( In Inner Harbor was a sea of pinstripes on the weekend when Cal was inducted. I hung my head in shame.

I think they tried to make contiguous areas. In reality there are “baseball enclaves” all around the country.

Right. I left my sarcasm indicators off my last comment. Sorry.

From the looks of it. They have generally captured the flavor of my area. Except I may argue with how far east the Cardinals go. I can’t imagine them pushing up against Cinncy. IRR, southern IN is mostly Reds fans.

About the Yankees fans invading Baltimore last weekend - it was Hall of Fame Induction Weekend. There were 50,000 O’s fans in Cooperstown (the other 20K were from San Diego, like me).

All the O’s fans took off to see Cal Ripken get inducted. Not surprised that the Yanks fans showed up.

True. Still gave me hives, though. ;) In fairness, it was a good time especially given how hot and crowded downtown was that weekend. Normally the town’s not so hectic because everyone’s gone to the beach.

strangely, this map is pretty accurate.

    What a fun map!

I think I’d push the Braves all the way to the NC coast, expand the Orioles (they were always the second team in NC after the Braves), and reduce the Nationals. The Nat’s are too new to really wield any kind of influence outside of DC and tidewater VA.

I’ve lived in four of the states where the Reds, Cardinals, and Braves are fighting it out for fans and would have to say that the map is fairly accurate for those areas.
Maybe they are just pulling their data from Fox Sports programming since they cater to regions. :)

It appears to have a Nike logo on it so I’m sure they are somehow involved.

If Nike was involved, it’s probably based on orders of their MLB merchandise.

Jack, is that really you??? Also, I’m asctually amazed that the Royals actually even registered on the map!

Everyone knows that America’s team is the Atlanta Braves!

  • 14 KoS // Aug 13, 2007 at 5:48 pm

Well, before Atlanta became America’s team. I would tape their games to hear my friends and I scream and yell.

Then a couple years later, everyone else and their mother started to show up at ole Fulton County Stadium. Ruined all the fun. :(
