Richie Carmichael released ArcGIS Diagrammer 9.2 (beta) and it is very impressive. I’ve used Geodatabase Diagrammer in the past with Visio to create such graphics, but this new ArcGIS Diagrammer will simplify the process. ArcGIS Diagrammer is a visual editor for ESRI’s Xml Workspace Document that is created out of ArcCatalog. You can graphically manipulate the geodatabase schema in a GUI application that is best described as a cross between Visual Studio 2005 and Visio. I tried to load up the whole schema for SDSFIE 2.5, but alas I didn’t have enough memory (or patience) on my laptop to let it complete. Simple geodatabases though are a breeze to edit and analyze. Anyone who manages data with the ESRI Geodatabase will want to check this tool out.

Wow… SDSFIE won’t load?? I remember watching it take over 8 hours to load SDSFIE into a Personal Geodatabase.. So to display it graphically isn’t a huge surprise. But the tool sounds totally cool… will check that out!!

James -
I’ve wanted to diagram the SDSFIE schema for a long time, since the ‘rational rose’ PDF documents that come with the release are such a waste of digital paper….and this tool seemed to warrant an attempt.
I downloaded the Diagrammer - then saw I needed an XML workspace file to import. Going into ArcCatalog, figuring I would create this file from an SDSFIE geodatabase - I found out I am out of luck since XML workspace export is not available at the ArcView license level. Once again - ESRI makes my life a search for a workaround….maybe someday I can get the extra $K to finally get an ArcEditor or ArcInfo license. Hmmm…what other software can I give up to free the budget? Nothing….
So - I went to http://www.sdefie.org looking for a XML file or maybe an export tool…and found the Geobatabase XML Constructor, thinking that might help - but it doesn’t work and crashes on my system. Whew…like I’ve got more time today to try and get the Diagrammer tool to work…
Do you know of a source to download an XML Workspace file for SDSFIE, either v2.5 or v2.6?

FYI…my problem with the Geodatabase XML Constructor was that I only had v2.5 installed. After installing v2.6 , it worked…but it doesn’t create a usable XML workspace file, but probably an XML file to use in an SDSFIE compliance checker.

Brian, I’ll throw up the 2.5 workspace xml on my server. Its 84 megs uncompressed so I’ve zipped it up.

Does anyone know if it is possible to set the xy resolution for your feature classes with the GDB diagrammer 9.2 beta?. I see the ability to edit the tolerance but alas not the resolution. Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

Hi Jason,
ArcCatalog’s “XY resolution” for a feature class is equivalent to the inverse of ArcGIS Diagrammer’s “XY scale”.
That is:
XYResolution = 1 / XYScale, or
1 / XYResolution = XYScale
Here is a recent whitepaper that explains the geodatabase coordinate management in 9.2 and pre-9.2.
http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=knowledgebase.whitepapers.viewPaper&PID=43&MetaID=1301
Hope this helps.

Richie

Installed the ArcGis Diagrammer and went to change language of the reports for Portuguese, but noted that the project there was an “FILE_GEODATABASE_EXCHANGE.xsd.”. Do you could send my email?

Hi Rubens,
The file referenced as “file_geodatabase_exchange.xsd” in the ArcGIS Diagrammer source code is equivalent to the following file in ArcGIS Desktop 9.3:
C:\program files\arcgis\xmlschema\gdbexchange.xsd
I mistakening omitted this file from the ArcGIS Diagrammer source code, sorry. This will be included in future versions.
To make a Portuguese data and/or schema reports, edit the following files and then recompile ArcGIS Diagrammer.
ESRI.ArcGIS.Diagrammer\xml\file_data_report.xslt, and/or
ESRI.ArcGIS.Diagrammer\xml\file_schema_report.xslt
For future assistance with ArcGIS Diagrammer, may I suggest you post questions to the ESRI data model forum:
http://forums.esri.com/forums.asp?c=141
Kind Regards,
Richie
