ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 3 Due by End of July

July 16th, 2007 · 23 Comments · ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Engine, ArcGIS Image Server, ArcGIS Server, ArcIMS, ArcObjects, ArcSDE, ESRI

As most of you already have heard via either the new RSS feeds or the support email, ArcGIS 9.3 9.2 Service Pack 3 is ready to be released by the end of the month. Jack’s Q&A from before the UC said that it would be released in July and it appears that they have hit the target. Remember Service Pack 4 is due October/November and then 9.3 at the beginning of next year.

Update: thanks to Steve for pointing out that 9.3 isn’t out yet and that I really meant 9.2. :)

As much as I am excited about SP3!, I ‘d rather come up with a caption for the graphic:

-Nuclear power industry anxiously awaits new software upgrade

-ESRI swag fails to inspire Manifold users

-Mr. Dangermond was out of the office and could not be reached for comment

    How about :

    - James shouldn’t post articles before having his morning coffee.

    I think you meant 9.2 instead of 9.3 :p

Shoot, way to ruin my morning….

Riiiight. ESRI hit a target? UNPOSSIBLE!

  • 5 J Wallis // Jul 16, 2007 at 11:08 am

Wow, some of these bugs that got fixed were totally egregious! I didn’t have some of those problems with v9.1….

Ive personally reported 5 bugs with ArcGIS server in the past months… none of them are on the list of corrections. They arent minor issues either, like supporting KML network links with SDE layers that have fields over 255 chars long without crashing google earth. Hopefully this list is not complete… I wonder how many people are actually working on fixing their crappy software?

Two, and one of them is out on vacation.

When does the Postgre support happen?

  • 9 James Fee // Jul 16, 2007 at 4:43 pm

At ArcGIS 9.3 which will be out early 2008

Must…. resist….urge… to pile on ESRI.

Ugh; I give in. My personal favorite “NIM009348 - IServiceDescription needs to return external URLs when ArcGIS Server is configured to work with a ReverseProxy.”

Translation boys and girls? ArcGIS Server services cannot be accessed by a thick client such as ArcGIS desktop outside the network via reverse proxy service (i.e. Apache). The client can see that the service exists but can’t do anything beyond that. Render the service in the data frame? Nope. Data replication? Sorry. Export data? Pshhhh.

You have to ask, how, how in the world did such a bug slip through qa/qc and field testing? No one tested a service outside the network with ArcGIS desktop? Not once? This software has so much potential which is the most frustrating thing about it. Egregious is right Mr. Wallis, and negligent might I add.

Oh, and the best part of it was the workaround suggested by tech support. Sitting down? “You’ll need to put your ArcGIS Server box out on the DMZ.” Seriously… out in the DMZ… I’ll just go right on and do that (insert sarcastic inflection here). Argh.

Why yes, because don’t you know, no one would ever do anything malicious to a GIS server!

does anyone still have major issues with TIF image display? My users are having all kinds of screwy issues, from tifs refusing to stay georeferenced to simply not displaying at all. they really screwed the pooch on TIF support in 9.2.

So… two days left in July. Anyone think that ESRI will miss their own arbitrary deadline?

  • 14 David E. Wright // Jul 30, 2007 at 11:20 am

Andrew… I bet Manifold could hit there deadline!! (sorry.. had to say it!)

I am pretty sure we will see something in the next day or so.. then we will get the email about a problem with the upload, that all users need to download a ‘improved’ sp3, this way they hit the target and still have time to fix it properly!

  • 15 Gady // Jul 31, 2007 at 12:18 pm

Still no SP3. Think they are skipping lunch right now in Redlands?

  • 16 An // Jul 31, 2007 at 12:37 pm

Assuming that they believe in accountability at ESRI, I’d hate to be the manager that made that promise.

Still got 8 hours to go :P
