I have to give it to Paul, I think this is a risky move. There are so many sessions that I suspect many will give up voting after a while. That said if you are up to the challenge and are going to the FOSS4G, you should probably go vote for what you want to see. So if you want to get into that open source spirit, now is the time.

Well, yes, it is a bit overwhelming. But so far (3 days in) we have had 110 people submit more than 20 preferences, and a total of 6500 preferences expressed. A statistically equivalent, but less “direct” seeming approach might have been a “hot or not” system, where reviewers are presented with 30 or 40 pairs of abstracts, and simply decide which one they liked more. I think folks would find that easier to go through, but less convincing at an emotional level than directly choosing their preferred talks… I hope we get up to 250 reviewers, as that will be a strong sample of total final attendance, IMO.
