Want to See the ArcGIS REST API?

June 19th, 2007 · 12 Comments · ArcGIS Server, ESRI, ESRI Developer Network, Microsoft, Virtual Earth

Looks like Microsoft is going to demo the REST API and Virtual Earth. Someone needs to stop by and get the details.

ESRI Announces new REST API for Interoperability at 2007 User Conference

With the release of 9.3, ESRI will provide an ArcGIS JavaScript library that extends the Microsoft Virtual Earth Software Development Kit. You can use the extended SDK to mashup content from any ArcGIS 9.3 Server via the REST API for ArcGIS Server with Virtual Earth maps and imagery. In the Microsoft booth #2101 on the ESRI UC exhibition floor this week, the Virtual Earth team will be demonstrating this capability through 3 simple demos provided by the ESRI team.

I’d be parking my rear at Microsoft’s booth ASAP given how important this announcement is for ESRI and ESRI developers (its a shame this couldn’t be shown at the Dev Summit, but whatever).

    James,

I too, believe this is a huge step for ESRI to allow the porting of AGS 9.3 data into VE. Curious if something similar is in the works with Google?

Looking forward to seeing a live demo on the web in the next week or two (hopefully).

    Enjoy the conference!

Want to see the ArcGIS REST API?

actually, I’d like to see ArcGIS put to REST

or, I’d like to see ArcGIS REST IN PEACE

The Microsoft booth was wierd to me. Basically a lot of Microsoft partners, but very few people from MS. The partners did have some cool stuff, and their implementations pitches didn’t scare me away like in the past. (in other words, it seems like they get it, instead of taking a traditional developer approach to a GIS problem).

I just saw the demo and according to the guy I talked to the demo doesn’t use the REST api. The demo uses arcgis server 9.2. He said VE is wrapped in a WMS server.

Really? The MS guys at the booth told me it was AGS 9.3 and REST API. Maybe there are two demos. I’m pretty sure at least one demo there is running the REST API.

There was a demo there running the REST API. It just wasnt very impressive to me.

Also, the techdemos.esri.com is back up. They got some new iron from AMD and I think its runnning Citrix PS4.5

Ok, so I went back to the Microsoft demo to see if I was crazy. They definitely have two different demos. I saw the REST API and I have to agree with J Wallis that it wasn’t very impressive. There is definitely one guy (Todd) running a demo with arcgis server running on 9.2 using VE as the basemap. It looked way better than the REST API demo.

Keep in mind that the REST API is brand new. They didn’t even show it at the Dev Summit.

HI,ArcWeb services team expert,i have a problem with Rest api and soap api.Now Google have abandoned soap api, support Rest api entirely, beacause Rest is simple and lightly.this is enough whth data resource to share through internet, why soap api is mainly with arcweb services.
Finally,i want to know ESRI compare these form API,and is changed since with ArcGIS Product?
    expect your reply,tks.

Another,we have developed serveral REST API to implement government spatial information resource services system, but these REST API is base of ArcIMS.
The solution for spatial information resource to share should use mixed ArcIMS and ArcGIS Server, because REST API is lightly, only some complex app logic should use SOAP API,and it is main web services api with ArcGIS Server.
    I hope your advice.
