Thanks ArcMap for Ruining My Morning

Sure I should have hit save more often, but nothing ruins a Monday morning when this crap shows up. What a way to throw away an hours worth of work.

POS Crap Shouldn't Happen Anymore

This never would have happened if you were using Manifold :)

If you were using the open source stuff, you would have been required to submit a bug report telling folks how to fix it :)

Why? Why? Why?….I thought 9.2 was a major fixer upper!…

click on the “error report” to confirm that you are sending your SSN and credit card #… then do some voodoo on the developers’ doll… then click on “don’t send” and get back to work!!!

In my experience – the afuilib.dll file crashes ArcMap everytime I close the program. After a few days, the Microsoft Error Reporting app comes up with quite a few ‘error reports’ to tell Microsoft about. With these reports made it to ESRI.

I still can’t figure out which ArcScript tool is causing this to happen. And without those scripts – being stuck with an ArcMap license and not ArcInfo is quite painful…

Can someone tell the monkeys at ESRI to include an autosave function in ArcMap?

It wouldn’t be that hard to create an autosave extension for ArcMap, would it? Of course, we shouldn’t have to in the first place.

D’oh! Ive gotten used to saving my mxd, edits, and exporting backup shapefiles to my temp folder, especially when I have a project to deliver. 9.2 is extremely buggy… My favorite so far is that it usually crashes when you hit windows + D, the display desktop shortcut, when you have more than one mxd open.

Windows+D crashes in 9.1 with more than one window open. Guess that was not fixed in 9.2.

use Windows+M, goes straight to desktop without a forced desktop refresh or crashing ArcGIS for me

Want some fun on Monday morning?….Run 9.2 on Vista and attempt a PDF export. I know 9.2 is not supported on Vista, but I am getting work done under Vista.
I had to turn off UAC to get ArcGIS to work reasonably well. And before I forget..I also use Manifold for some chores.

If you use a concurrent ArcMap license, be sure to also manually remove the hung license from the license manager. You might get another nasty indicating ‘all licenses in use’.

But on the first place of my favorite exceptions: java.lang.NullPointerException.

Be aware of it! Everytime! Everywhere!

  15. Posted February 27, 2007 at 10:24 am | Permalink

It’s a whole bunch of fun when it crashes & you lose your current work, but even better is when it crashes & corrupts the .mxd file. Thus, rendering all your work on that project moot, unless you have a backup or have made extensive use of layers. I now do both after having been burnt by it more than a few times.

sounds like a great product for $10,000. Where can I buy it…

I’m tired of using a $245 product that does everything I need.

I think it was rather nice of Jack to build in forced reminders for you to take a break. As you know, staring too long at the monitor causes eye strain.

Still running 9.1 (and will until IT wrenches it from my bleeding fingers).

Every time I get this message, it is rundll.dll that is crashing my machine…same with my co-workers.

We’ve noticed though that when we use a dual core machine we don’t get this problem nearly as much.

Ref: auto save – - this seems like a no brainer for ESRI to provide – why isn’t it already there? There is a script on the support site to auto save edits/mxds’ during an mxd edit session.

Ref: arrogant Manifold snobs piling on — enough already. If you want to gloat about your invoice and/or Zen-like GIS package call an accountant, call a therapist – just don’t post idiotic “mine is better than yours” crap.

Ref: ArcMap crashing – - is it me or was 8.x more stable (think of AV 3X before answering) than 9x? I empathize, I lost an hour of work at 4am today … my new laptop should be delivered via UPS tomorrow.

Ref: Jack Dangermond comment to this post: Outstanding!! (unless JD was really a Manifold snob in ESRI clothing – in which case refer to previous comment about arrogant Manifold snobs).

Database not retaining my edits. Survey data checkins in fine , save edits to database , close mxd and when I reopen arcview9.2 , data has dissappeared.

I just found a fix that worked for me. If you go to

    C:\Documents and Settings\Your Computer User Name\Application Data\ESRI\ArcMap\Templates

and delete Normal.mxt it may fix the problem. ArcMap automatically regenerates this template file on the next startup. Be warned: if you have made changes to the Normal.mxt template, they will be gone (at least mine were).

But, for me, that was a small price to pay.

Yep, that fixed my problem also. Wish I would have searched before reloading. Oh well, live and learn.

Don’t delete your normal.mxt. Instead rename inside Windows Explorer (must have arcmap closed). That way you don’t lose any customizations. Then restart ArcMap and let it recreate your normal.mxt.

    Cheers!

After finding this post (and seriously empathizing with everyone!), thought I’d let you all know that there is an ArcScript up that might be of assistance:

    MXD Auto Save: http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=15750

Also, the newest version of XTools has an autosave tool.

In spite of ESRI claiming that reducing crashes for ArcMap is their #1 priority for 9.3, I don’t see a reduction. Eventually, their crash reporting system will pay dividends but in the short term: looks like the crashes are here for a while!

    Take care all, james G.
