Peter’s blogging about desktop GIS choices on the Macintosh. He’s taking QGIS, uDig and Thuban for a spin. Many associate only the old ArcView 3.0 on Classic MacOS as the only desktop GIS choice, but as you can see there are even better choices than ArcView on the Macintosh. I’m interesting in reading what he finds out.

I am trying GRASS 6.2 on my G4. I really like the AV 9 interface which makes transitioning a little irritating; but, you can’t beat the price. So, I’ll learn GRASS and help make it better.
Check out TNTmips made by Microimages. They offer versions for windows, windows x64, mac, and Linux/Unix. http://www.microimages.com/
I have a copy of TNTlite on my wintel machine.
The interface came up looking just like the GRASS interface. I also have QGIS that I need to play with. I am working on a micro climate model that needs to reduce 17 or so parameters to indecies in order to simplify the analysis. So, my requirements are not simple choloplethic displays. GRASS and TNT both have some terrain analysis modules that I need to trial.
I also think you should try TNTmips. It is packed full of features and has outstanding documentation. It’s user interface takes a lot of getting used to though; too much for me. But I think it would be worth taking a look at if you wanted to work on a Mac.
I have the freeware version of TNT. The price for the full system is a little high for me right now. I will be looking at both TNTmips and GRASS w/QGIS as I work on a micro climate modeling system.
