ESRI Is a Adobe Flex 2 Success Story

June 29th, 2006 · 6 Comments · ESRI, ESRI Developer Network, GIS

I decided to spend this morning and try and figure out how Adobe’s new Flex 2 might change how I develop (or even blog). As I was clicking on links and reading some of the new features, I was surprised to see Mansour Raad and ESRI show up on the Flex 2 page inside a video. If I was ESRI, I’d be putting Mansour on the ESRI front page in a video. He’s so passionate about his work that you can’t help but get excited. :) When Mansour demoed ArcWeb Explorer to me back at the Dev Summit, I was blown away and I guess Adobe was too.

Interesting to see ArcGIS Explorer running in Mozilla.

Doug, that is ArcWeb Explorer which is different than ArcGIS Explorer. ESRI is horrible with these names being so close.

Is this ESRI’s response to being chagrined by Google’s acclaimed GE technology?

I like it! ESRI needs to allow itself to leap off the desktop and get onto cellphones, PDAs, etc.

They are also risking a bit on this technology: is there a present demand or are they chasing the recent net-map mashup craze that might soon fizz out?

Is it Flex 2 or Flex 3 they are using? I thought Flex 2 was already obsolete.

Flex 3 is the current version, but I wouldn’t categorize Flex 2 as obsolete. OTOH, Actionscript 2 is a bit long in the tooth.
