Public ArcWeb Services Error?

I know ArcWeb is working, but when I try and use the account I set up for Public ArcWeb Services I get the following error. Probably user error, but still very frustrating :(
Update - Andrea Rosso in the comments says as I suspected, user error.

    James,

The site is still in pre-release mode (hence no official announcement yet). There are a few glitches in the system which are still being worked on. This particular one is still being worked on and should be fixed very soon.

    James,

I spoke too soon. I thought this was some privilege issue but it is actually correct functionality. I assume you were trying to access the Upload or Create Services part of the site. Public Services does not give you access to this and a few other pieces of functionality and data. There is more info on this under the Public Services section under the ‘Develop’ tab and in the help system.

OK, I kind of figured that, but the error was confusing.

Hmm.. I was having some difficulty access the services in the public section. I ended up with an evaluation setup and it does not seem to allow me to get to the public section. I guess being in beta mode makes more sense now.

    Thanks for the info.

I noticed much of the api was not live yet and many of the different datasources were not available either. The REST mapping using the default sources worked…use BAM (best available map) to get the most coverage

I wanted to address some of the points in these comments:

James - We are working on the various errors messages on the site. I agree this one is misleading and we are going to change it.

Rockhound - I am not sure what you mean by ‘public section’. The part of the site that talks about ‘Public Services’ is available to anyone. You can only access the SOAP, REST and other web services once you’ve signed up for a Public Services account, an Eval account or a Commercial account.

Brian - All APIs are frozen at this time and we will not be changing them before release. For this release we are exposing only mapping (which seems of most interest to everyone) via the REST API, other functionality will be added in future releases. The only part that is not documented yet for REST is the projection support for which the documentation is currently being finalized.

As far as the datasources, there is a limited set exposed via the REST API and this is listed in the REST help system. For now you have AND world coverage available, and Tele Atlas for the US, Canada, and Europe (the BAM datasource will just pick the best one for your area). More datasources will come online after the final release.

I think it’s great to see the good feedback and excitment from all of you. I’ll keep an eye out for any feedback and accomodate it as best we can.

    Andrea-

Thanks very much for your response… There are some broken links on the website which may be where my confusion lies. I emailed support with the links in hopes they will correct them.

I thought there would be more of a separation for the accounts… I seem to have an evaluation account giving me credits and such but I am interested in just the public services… I guess I was not sure if the account would go away on the date indicated and I would have to sign up with a different account or if it would just continue with less options.

Also I tried the API for REST using my global account login and it returned the token but when I go to use it the page indicates the token is invalid, so I am not sure if I am again doing something wrong or its just in beta mode…

Most likely user error, but I figured I would ask.

And James thanks for having such a great blog to allow for this type of conversation.

    Rockhound,

The Eval vs. Public Services accounts are just different account types. The Eval gives you access to everything for a limited amount of time. The Public services one gives you access to a subset for non commercial use. The two are not really related, so once the Eval account expires you can either sign-up for a Commercial account or for a Public Services account but nothing happens automatically.

As far as the http://www.arcwebservices.com site is concerned, what you see is the same no matter what type of account you have. The only thing that changes is that some functionality is switched off in the site so that you cannot get to it. For instance, building custom services with a Public Services account.

Once you’ve signed up for your Eval or Public Services account and activated it with your global account user then you can start using the REST API, SOAP APIs, etc. using that global account login. I’m not aware of any issues in our authentication mechanism that wouldn’t allow you to use the token that was returned to you. If you’re still having problems the best thing to do is post to the user forums for help right now. We’re also adding samples soon for REST that might help you.
